Client Case Study - Jennifer

Hello, my name is Jennifer and I am a survivor. I am a 30 year old mother of two beautiful children ages 8 and 11 years old. After moving out of my family home at age 17, I struggled to become a graduate of high school and while living with my boyfriend I became pregnant. We married and I became a “child bride” at the age of 18, my marriage lasted a total of 12 years.

My goal in life was to make sure my children didn’t grow up like I did. I wanted them to be free of abuse, free to be healthy in mind, body, and spirit. I noticed that I was failing my goal when I accepted my husbands’ habits to do drugs, drink, financially control our lives and emotionally abuse me, all in the name of “love”. I was tired of crying and giving him the power to control me. I had to change my life, if not for my sake, for the lives of my two children.

I heard about the Couchiching Jubilee House program through my mom who was going to school with a graduate of the program. My mom informed me of the program and encouraged me to apply, I was granted an interview.  I walked out of the interview saying “please pick me”…

I was one of the fortunate ones that was accepted into the program and I welcomed it with an open mind and open arms. The volunteers are exceptional people, they applauded my accomplishments and encouraged me to have perseverance through the hard times. I am deeply touched by there compassion and commitment to the program and the residents of the house.

I am proud to say that I am achieving my unspoken promise that I made to my children, I have been accepted at a collage, I have a part time job, my own apartment, and am well on my way to healing the damage that was inflicted on my children and myself. I couldn’t have started this road to recovery if I didn’t have an opportunity like the one offered to me by the Couchiching Jubilee House.

On behalf of my children and myself, I would like to thank all those involved in my life, both as a resident and a graduate. I am honored to consider you all my friends and “my volunteers.”
